Koln with Trish and Ate Duds

By end of July, another niece, Trish arrived via CO 50 from New York-Newark. Since I couldn’t time off immediately, Duday and Trish had to stay for awhile longer here in Germany. They went out with hubby to Palmengarten, Saalburg before I finally drove with them to Brussels. On the way, we stopped by in Köln to see the Kölner Dom.

The night before we would be driving to Brussels, I got home really late from work. The minute I walked into the main door, Trish was already out from the other room to tell me she couldn’t sleep. So I slowly put my stuff down, I told her I would get her a glass of milk to help her sleep. I told her we should not be too noisy since we didn’t want to wake ate Duds up… to which sh e replied: “Oh, she’s awake, too”.

Hahaha, both girls couldn’t sleep being too excited for the drive the following morning.

Acciona and Continental service: tweethumbsDOWN!!!

My niece Trish, is with us again this summer. Trish is the daughter of my elder brother who currently resides in the US. She came to visit us for the first time summer of last year. Since she has no sibs of her own, (my two younger sisters living in Belgium also have one child each a Son and a Daughter respectively), we thought it would be nice if Trish could come and visit us during summer…if possible.

So, for the second consecutive summer in a row, Trish crossed the Atlantic Ocean to be with us. Her experience this time flying as Unaccompanied Minor was not as exciting as the first one. It was difficult in the plane because she didn’t have her own tv monitor behind the seat in front of hers. The airline didn’t have sufficient entertainment for kids her age. She said she just slept thru the flight.

When I came to pick her up at the airport, we almost missed each other cause the agent who escorted her looked to me like she was not quiet sure of what she was doing. Proof of that, she even forgot to hand to me the passport of my niece. With some other airlines, a child is given a pouch where all their documentations are placed upon check in. Passport, ticket, receipts and boarding passes/travel itinerary goes into the said pouch. Once the child boards the aircraft, said pouch is handed over to the Purser/Flight crew for safe keeping. Upon arrival at the destination, said pouch is handed over to the ground staff who will then assist the child to get through customs, baggage pick up and eventually turn the child over to the custody of the Parent/Guardian at the final destination. Said pouch is then either hanging on the child’s neck or if its just an envelope, handed over to the parent presenting identifications.

In our case, although the ground crew worked with us beyond the baggage check area, she didn’t hand over the said documents. I assumed that my niece had her stuff with her in a pouch stuck somewhere in one of her bags (she had three with her). Only when I was preparing her stuff to leave for Brussels, did I notice that her passport and other documents where missing.

The advantage of working at the airport is that one has somehow an idea of how the procedure works. If something goes wrong, it wouldn’t be such a hassle to correct it. Or so I thought. The soonest I was back at work, I immediately went to the airline to complain about the missing passport/documents. At that time, there was a Lufthansa agent talking to the flight manager of the airline. The flight manager told the Lufthansa agent to call Lufthansa Lost and Found services. Then the agent passed the phone over to me saying she didn’t understand the whole story. I should explain it myself to the person at the other end of the line. The said person then gave me another number to call. She said, it was the agency that does Unaccompanied Minors services for Continental airlines. After putting the phone down, I called the number immediately. I could talk to the person who still has the passport of my niece. Problem was, I work most of the time at Terminal 1 and their office was in Terminal 2. On that day that I called them, I couldn’t go to their office in immediately. I told the lady that I would be picking up the passport during my break-time later in the afternoon. She said I should call her first before I come over. By the time I could go on break, nobody was picking up the phone in their office anymore. That was a Friday. Saturday and Sunday I couldn’t reach anyone.

Another problem was, the airline counter was only manned/open during check-in times which was only until around 12:30 noon. Strange as it is, when I tried to call a listed number at the counter for services outside the check-in times, no one picks up the phone. I always got an automated voice message. When I could finally reach someone from a different number and the guy said he didn’t have any passport returned/surrendered to him. And that they don’t do any services for the airline that my niece came in with. I was slowly panicking. I couldn’t find the lady whom I talked to previously anymore. I went to lost and found to check, in case they surrendered the passport there. After several minutes of checking in the system, the lady at the lost and found office said she didn’t have a passport in my niece’s name registered. The only option for me was to wait until Monday and try to call the Passenger service agency again. It was really close since, we were supposed to go to Brussels Tuesday morning. If I needed to get the passport back before then. As a result, I left for work Monday morning two hours earlier just to be on the safe side. I got to the airport in plenty of time. But when I called the lady again who I got to talk to in the very beginning, she said that she was on break and would still need an hour to get back to her office. WTF! I was slowly boiling in annoyance. I said I didn’t care if she was in Hell on break, I needed the passport before 1:00 pm that day. I then implied that their agent who is responsible to hand the passport to me was not doing her job properly and now to have to wait for her to finish her break time is out of the question. She then obliged but of course without any “apologies” that she would call someone in their office to come down and give me back the passport. She gave me instructions to go to the information counter in Terminal 2 and call a different number again from there. Somebody would then come down and bring the passport to me. Then she said, “let’s say in half an hour”. I said in ten minutes and that I could wait no longer than that. I went there and called them again. There was a lady who came down, not the same one who assisted my niece unfortunately. When I asked her to wait until I could check if all the docs are still inside, she was very defensive and said immediately: “I was only told to bring that down here. I don’t know what’s inside”. Yes, okay, but let me see first. But she was about ready to leave. She said, as in, word for word: “I gave you the envelope. Have a good day!” That was it. No apologies about the inconvenience nor the mistake of her colleague.

It took all effort for me to bite my tongue then. I had to keep my calm then. I didn’t want to go to work still irritated as I need to be calm when I am at work. That’s one rule for me. In the end I was just happy that I could get the passport back. But now I know, have to avoid that agency again if I can. Oh, of course, the airline as well. All the time I was going around in circles trying to get the passport back and there was no mention of the airline, except at the beginning. There was no effort on their part to help get the passport back. Imagine for someone who does not work at the airport how frustrating it would be for them to get back their missing item. Okay, one can go to the Lost and Found office… but that only works if the missing item was surrendered there. In our case it was not. So, the last time we would be using the airlines’ services is when my niece would fly back to the US end of August. She has a round trip ticket with them and we can’t change that anymore.

Bonding with Duday in Berlin

My niece Duds came to visit me from Brussels. After roaming around Frankfurt am Main, going shopping at Wertheim Village and biking around Altenstadt, we decided to go to Berlin whilst hubby is away on a business trip. No sense staying in Altenstadt the whole time.

For two nights and three days, we roamed around Berlin. We stayed at a hotel in Potsdamer-Platz as hubby recommended. From there, we just either walked to almost all of the must see places there. The Siegelsäule, The Museum Island, The Berlin TV Tower and the Wax Museum to name some. Although the last one had a very long line when we went there despite the heavy rain, so we decided not to stay.

It was really fun despite the heavy rain that poured on the last day we were there. Duday almost didn’t want to leave the place anymore.

Daylight saving or chaotic living?

Woke up at around 06:09 a.m. today with pain in my abdomen. Got up, went to the kitchen to get a glass of water. When I got there, I noticed hubby’s huge wall clock and saw the time again. 07:09…huh??? Time travel? Rubbed my eyes to see if maybe it was just the morning glory playing with my eyes. It’s not. It really was 07:09 turning 07:10. Okay, walked past the dining room and crossed over to the living room, turned the television on and saw the time was 07:11. Huh??? Oh….

We just had the night before time change. We have Daylight Saving Time here in Germany. A lot of people get confused about the change. It’s always the question of either (we) add one hour or deduct one hour from the actual time. Then, of course, people who have to go to work on weekends have the misfortune of either getting to work late or one hour too early. I should be used to it by now, but I still get confused each time we have time change. It does happen twice a year. Once in Autumn and then again in Spring. I guess we will have to live with this changes all our lives. Every European country, except Iceland observes Daylight Saving Time.

In Russia though, I heard on the radio that this will be the last time they will have time change. People there claim that this time changes make their life routine chaotic and and may be causing ailment therefore, DST will be abolished in Russia, according to the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on his announcement last Feb. 8 this year. “When the clocks change over for summer or for winter, people experience a stress and may develop an ailment. So the unchanged time would have a positive effect,” he said. They changed time last night for the last time this year. Come October they will not turn back their time. Should I say lucky them?

Well, for now, I can’t decide if I prefer to have DST or if I can imagine not changing times come Fall or Spring. I’m just glad that I didn’t have to rush to work today.

Malamig (Cold)

LP Challenge: MALAMIG

I think this has been the coldest winter I’ve ever experienced here in Germany. Just looking at the eaves of the houses makes me afraid to stand right below it. The icicles could be really dangerous when it falls on a person. Tsk, tsk…deadly weapon, dear!

We went to visit my in-laws and what met us was the roads were all covered with snow 10 meters high. Okay, I may sound exaggerating, but when we shoveled the snow to clear the path right in front of the garage door, it really piled up to as high as a normal car. My tiny Ford Fiesta would be covered totally. Had to search for a higher place where I could park it since the garage was already occupied by the car of my in-laws.

Planning for the next trip already…

“How about going to an “FKK” Oasis for our next short vacation?”, hubby asked while checking out places where we would go next. That is after our trip to Italy and Gran Canaria. I had to scratch the last one, since I won’t be able to join him on that trip.

“FKK” is short for “Freikörperkultur” ( Free Body Culture). A naturistic approach to community living. It maybe a camp or beach community where people are naked all the time. Yes, a “nudist” community. The principle behind is to enjoy and experience nature in being nude itself. In case you are wondering, it has no direct relation to sexuality or to sex itself. The traditional followers of this culture is called naturist’s or nudist’. Yes, here in Germany, this community is known to exist. You can read more about this culture here.

The thing is, if one wants to go to a place like this, one has to be open enough to walk around naked. As in totally naked. No shred of clothing should be worn. Anyway, if one decides to stay there and does not follow rules, won’t one feel weird because all the others aren’t wearing anything anyway. But I cannot imagine me, a Filipina, doing just that. I heard from my aunt once that she had a Filipina friend who is married to a  German who once went to a place like this. It was really uncomfortable for the couple since the Filipina would not budge in getting out of her clothes. So, they ended up staying in the place for three whole days she fully clothed and him, together with the rest of the people there naked!

I couldn’t imagine myself in her shoes. I would die of shame if I would be forced to do it. I tried to explain this to hubby. Fortunately, he is ok with it and immediately dismissed the idea.

Instead, we agreed to think about the next long vacation that we will be having around the last quarter of the year. It will be in the Philippines of course, but some place where we haven’t visited. Hmmm, I’m thinking the Caramoan Islands in Camarines Sur. (Picture is from the same linked site). I have heard a lot of good reviews about the place. Also, what we normally do on our vacations like island hopping, hiking, mountain biking, scuba diving, snorkelling and kayaking are offered in this place. So why not? Anyway, i still have some time to organize the trip. Way before September, I think we should be able to come up already with a fixed date and Itinerary. Till then I’m still open to other suggestions but “FKK” is out of the question!

heilpraktiker entry

Several years ago, I was diagnosed as chronically ill. I had an infection in my liver that the doctors could not really find the cause. I had problems like back pain, muscle pains in my legs and was always tired. Some days, I didn’t have so much energy. My cough made it just worst since I had it for more than six months. If it would stop for a while, it was always sure to come back after some weeks. The leg pain went away after an Acupuncture therapy with my general doctor. Since then, it seems like there is no signs of it coming back again. But the infection in my liver was never cured. I had blood tests every three months. Most of the levels were okay, except for one that was always extremely high. And it stayed that way all the time. Whereas for a normal healthy person, that level should only be at 60-80, mine was always at 260 till 400. Once it even went up to 600 for a few months. My doctor could also not explain it. But, I don’t blame him since even the specialists who looked into my illness case, also said there wasn’t anything wrong with me.

Hepatitis was ruled out. I was definitely checked for it.

In one of my visits to my mother-in-law, where we always showed photos of our recent trips, my sister-in-law showed us their photos when she and her husband joined an alternative medicine doctor on a “Fasting and Wandering” tour. Fasting in the sense, that only liquid is taken for the whole duration of the tour. It can be tea, water or clear soup. The insides has to be cleansed as well. With the help of “Glaubersalz” and or Internal irrigation of the stomach and intestines at the beginning of the fasting period. After three days of the fasting begin, internal cleansing has to be performed again. The whole fasting period could take a week or even more. They have been doing it for sometime, my sister-in-law said, and it has been a lot of help for them. Both in keeping themselves healthy and maintaining their desired weight. She suggested that maybe I should also try it just to find out if it would help cure my so-called “sickness”.

I was not totally convinced at first. But hubby urged me to do it, so we did. Anyway, we thought if it doesn’t work out for me, it was at least an experience, another adventure for us both.

Our first “Fasting and Wandering” tour was in Algarve, Portugal. We flew there and met our guide, an Alternative medicine doctor, Frau Wirth. Later at the resort where we stayed, we met 11 others who have been doing the tours for several years already. There were only three of us who are first timers. The group was diverse. Mostly of course, Germans but almost all are well traveled. I was intimadated at first, but they were all very friendly. Our guide was also very helpful in explaining to us everyday what was in the program.

All the “to-do” stuff was explained in exact details. If we needed help, she was there to assist us. It made us really feel comfortable with the group who knew each other before from the previous travels. Suffice it to say, we survived the whole two weeks without eating anything. Yes, it is a wonder, but definitely possible. What I couldn’t really believe myself, was the fact that I really could walk for hours (even without food intake, except liquids) without complaining. I did it! I lasted and the most beautiful part of it is that I lost weight. I lost more than 8 kilos already…the best part is I maintained my desired weight. No yo-yo effect at all. My food intake routine was changed. I can still eat anything I want during the day. But there are some limitations and restrictions about what to eat in the morning and evenings.

After that tour, we had our second tour with my sister-in-law HP Martina Kienzle-Schott as our guide. She is really good. With her personal experience and of course she learned to be one, we don’t need to go to other HP guides anymore. The last tour we, hubby and I did was spring last year. We tried it just the two of us. Okay, we were calling Martina all the time for some questions about the whole procedure which only a legal Heilpraktiker could answer. But in the end we made it. The next schedule tour is in March. I won’t be able to join but hubby enlisted already.

*keeping it up*

January 2011

2011 started good. I know some friends are moving on. My sister-in-law just finished her schooling and in April will be opening her clinic for Alternative medicine (Heilpraktiker). I will be posting her website address here as soon as it is ready.

A friend who has been helping me in keeping my hair, my crowning glory ever healthy has openned a salon right in the middle of Frankfurt am Main city. I am so happy for him. I will be visiting him in a couple of hours today. The Grand Opening though will still be at the end of the month.

And I have started a new job. A better earning one and definitely less stressful. I still have to wake up at 03:30 a.m. some days, but I can live with that already. I have been doing that for years now, that I am actually much used to that schedule. The thing is, now I only have to go to work four days a week, much better than going sometimes 7 consecutive days to work for a few hours in the morning and then with one day off only. The pay is definitely a big level up from the previous jobs that I had, so I can’t complain.

So, hopefully, the year will continue to bring us all more blessings and better dispositions. Oh,yeah, today is a very special day. It’s 1.11.11 (January 11, 2011). I do believe that the whole year will be really fruitful for everybody!

Back in the saddle again…

Yes, I work again at Frankfurt International airport. I actually started 1st of December. Until now I am still on training and already I am getting bored at it. I have always thought that an 8 a.m. till 4:30 p.m. job, from Monday to Friday is a dream. It is not! Or at least not for me. I am so waiting for my regular shifting schedule where sometimes I get to start at 05:30 till 14:00  or if I am lucky, I get to start at 13:300 till 22:00 pm. I am also looking forward to work just four consecutive days a week instead of five. Of course, working in shifts has its cons as well. But, I am so used to it already, that the con part is actually not so negative for me anymore.

I am really glad that I have something to do again now. I heard on the news just the other day that the unemployment rate in Germany, as of December 2010, according to Spiegel Online is at 7.2% which is around 3,016 million. It’s very scary to think that a first world country here in Europe is also under recession. But, I guess this is not only a case of one country. Worlwide recession is known to all of us.

That’s why, I am just as thankful that I have a secure job now. Hopefully, I’ll be able to keep the job long enough until I am eligible to claim for pension, hehehe.

The Dancing crew

Interesting concept of the Cebu Pacific Airlines.

Since they started in operation, they have had lots of gimmicks for their passengers. Let’s admit it, the surest advertising and marketing strategy is by word of mouth.

They always had “the bring me” game. It makes the flight less boring and somewhat faster. As prices, they give away caps, shopping bags, toy planes, umbrellas, sun visors, and coffee mugs.

This time, they topped so far their attention catching gimmicks. Dancing crews demonstrating the safety protocol. Don’t know about you guys, but honestly, each time I sit board the plane, first thing i do is get something to read. After I have settled myself, I then start reading until I fall asleep. This means from preparation all the way to take off, I never pay much attention to the safety protocol anymore. Oh, I do scan the safety instructions in front of me anyway, just to make sure there is nothing new that I have to be aware of. Otherwise, I think it is basically the same, hence the disinterest.

I really thought that this is NOT the actual safety protocol demo of the flight. I noticed that the dancing crew only came out while the flight is already on cruising range. I don’t think any flight is to leave the ground without performing the safety demo or showing it on video as most airlines do. If the airline do not comply to this, they would have problems with the Aviation authority, or am I wrong in this line of thinking? But perhaps I am misleaded? Here you can watch the Cebu Pacific Airline Female dancing crew.

Anyway, I think the main purpose of the airline is to attract more passengers to take Cebu Pacific flights. Well, why not. They have really affordable flights. The cheapest I think in the country. They also happen to have a very friendly crew. Definitely good quality service is one of the assets of the airlines. On direct contact, I at least had only positive experience with them. There is a big problem that they need to work on though. When I made my online booking from outside the country, I couldn’t use my International credit card. For some reason, they said it had something to do the regulations of my bank. But I never experienced this problem anywhere else in the world. Anyway, I had to call the hot-line number and had the unfortunate experience of talking to their agent where in the end, the problem escalated. I ended up waiting till I got to Manila and made a completely new booking. It turned out for the better though, since I got a much, much cheaper deal. But I stay the same in saying that Cebu Pacific needs to fix the problem of the inconvenience that the call center agents are giving to the clients. Or fix the online payment problem perhaps?

All the same, I do commend them for their new idea of in-flight entertainment (if indeed it
is only in-flight entertainment and not the actual flight safety demonstration) for the passengers right now. The latest and newest gimmick in the airline industry.

Otherwise, if this IS the safety demo that they have now, I wonder what the Aviation Authority said about the matter? Here is the link to the Cebu Pacific Airline Male dancing crew.

These boots are made for walking…

It’s great to be back. I was up in the Austrian Alps. I didn’t have internet connection for one whole week. Okay, I know that even up there one can stay connected online. Heck, perhaps even at the peak of the highest mountain in the whole world, one can still be connected to the WWW nowadays. Thanks to the people who contribute to the advancement of technology. My being offline though for the whole week was actually by choice. It was a chance to be reunited with mother Nature. A time to experience life again without any phone calls, emails. The chance to embrace the primitive way of life of our ancestors. It went okay in the beginning. At least until one day, hubby and I lost our trail and ended up at a cliff 1889 meters high. Then we decided GPS is important. It took us longer to get down. At which point, my right knee was already getting really uncomfortable. I could hardly bend it. Imagine going downhill without bending your knees. Terrible. We finally managed to find the clearing.

It was fun. Everyday we took different trails. Each day was an adventure on its own, depending on how difficult the trail was. Really, every trail was different from the other. From light and fun to hard and adventurous. The trail where I had difficulty with my knee was not the hardest, but it was the highest and longest trail we took. It felt like the wandering would take forever that day. Amazing how one could walk for hours and still after some point you find that you only walked 300 meters away from the last point. Of course, when one is suffering from discomfort and pain, then this happens which was for me the case. But, in the end it was also a very good trail.

We also took a really light trail, where we just went through the towns and the altitude of the place was not too high. It was in this wander trail where I found my boots. Two, even.

I saw the high cut soft leather boots from the window outside the shop. I went in, tried a pair on and I fell in love with them. It was a bit too much for my normal price range, but they are really good and comfortable. I decided to close an eye and paid for the pair.

As I was on my way out of the shop, a low cut pair of boots caught my attention. I thought, nah, maybe I don’t need it anymore. I went already way too much my price limit with the other one. I sure should not look at more. But then hubby urged me to try it as well. See, my problem is that I always have a difficult time shopping for shoes. I could go from shop to shop the whole day and simply come home empty handed. Hubby knows this already and he always thinks that if I find something which I really like, I should already grab it immediately and not think twice about it. Otherwise, If I leave it overnight and then go back another day, I would find that the thing is already sold out and would end up getting something that I only half wanted. Of course, each time this happens, I always reprimand myself. I don’t know why, but It keeps happening to me anyways.

Oh, by the way, I don’t plan, of course to use any of these two new boots for wandering, hehehe. For that, a special one was ordered. It actually didn’t matter to me before what shoes I wear for wandering as long as they were comfy enough to walk in for more then 3 hours. But, I soon realized that if one is really serious about wandering, then one also needs to be properly equipped for it. Since I got my wandering shoes more than a year ago, I never had problems with feet nor ankles. Not to mention if we have to go through really rough trails, I am confident enough that I wouldn’t just slip or loose my balance. I tell you, it pays! Curoious? Here they are. Not so impressive or extravagant looking. But they are my three favorites at the moment.
